Audio: Noam Chomsky - USA & EU
Updated: Dec 16, 2022
This interview was recorded in Boston at the MIT in the office of Noam Chomsky (March 2002).
"There is no such thing as a neoliberal world order." Noam Chomsky vehemently disagrees with this widespread idea. For never would the super-rich and powerful elites in the US and the EU allow it. Rather, the state and the community of states act in the interests of the super-rich elites and not the market. The best example of this is the Brexit. But Chomsky also sees differences between the U.S. and the EU: unlike the U.S., the EU is dominated to a far greater extent by big banks, which dominate european politics. The 2009 financial crisis was an example of this, when Europe bailed out banks with taxpayer money ignoring any form of democratic participation and controll, and, at the same time driving the Greek state into poverty. The last part of the conversation is about the role of intellectuals in capitalist societies.
