From 1998-1999, the Taliban ruled almost 90% of Afghanistan's land area. As the only western journalist I was able to interview leading members of the government of the time. The Taliban who are currently seizing power in Afghanistan are not the Taliban from over 20 years ago. A new generation has grown up, ideologically less emphatic with the same national-Islamic radicalism. The "New Taliban" are more technocratic and, based on the experience of the past 20 years of Western occupation, will be more efficient without forgetting their radical roots. Listen to the podcast.
